At last a comfortable and effective solution for bunions July 23 2013
At least fifteen million people in the UK suffer from bunions - 85 per cent of them women over the age of 45. This could be because women’s ligaments tend to be looser than men’s, but also because of the sorts of narrow toe shoes, many women like to wear. It is believed that ill-fitting shoes are a major cause of bunions, but they also run in families. Bunions are unsightly, and they eventually cause pain, stiffness and swelling of the big toe joint, difficulty walking and problems finding shoes that fit comfortably.
The best way to reduce your risk of getting a bunion, and to avoid aggravating an existing bunion is to wear shoes that fit well.
According to the NHS, bunion symptoms usually get worse if the bunion is left untreated, so it is always best to visit your GP who may refer you to a foot specialist – a podiatrist or chiropodist. Surgery to correct the bunion may be recommended if your symptoms are severe. There are over 130 different operations to treat bunions, the simplest and most popular being the ‘bunionectomy’. However, most specialists will usually first recommend non-surgical treatments and will also give advice on suitable footwear.
According to the NHS, if you don’t seek treatment for bunions, they can lead to further problems such as arthritis in the big toe and they can also push your second toe out of place. Problems can also result from bunion surgery. While surgery is usually effective (85% of cases improve symptoms), bunions can sometimes return.
A new product on the market, new to the UK, but having sold over 160,000 overseas, is Bunion Sleeve. It is the only product on the market which is truly comfortable to wear, soft, thin material which fits snugly over the foot and gently straightens the big toe. It is one of the few products on the market that can be worn comfortably under stocks and so is popular with walkers and runners. Regular runner and Owner of Gower Health & Fitness Solutions, Michael Gower, says ‘I discovered this product myself after months of searching for relief from a bunion which was preventing me from running and sometimes even walking without extreme pain.’
